The Shang Shung Institute Austria proudly presents the latest information about the

13th Tibetan Translator Training for Translators from Tibetan

of the Ka-Ter Translation Project:

at Merigar West, Arcidosso (GR), Tuscany, Italy

June 24 – July 24  2015 

 The training for translators from Tibetan is an initiative of the Shang Shung Institute Austria that first started in 2003. In 2015 we will hold the 13th training.

Join us and learn to translate ancient texts from the Tibetan tradition. If you are already skilled you can deepen your knowledge, discuss techniques, compare with others, and train your ability in a collaborative environment inspired by the ancient practice of translating in groups.

The training for the advanced students and the intermediate students will take place in the same time period.

Intermediate Level

Intermediate students Level will be given a relatively simple text and work on the translation individually or in small groups. Their work will then be reviewed and corrected in group-sessions. The instructor will be available for clarifications. The objective is for students to become familiar with vocabulary, grammatical structures, and syntax in context. Instructor The training will be led by Prof. Fabian Sanders, professor of Tibetan Language and Literature at the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice.

Requirements for Participation

  1. All participants must be ordinary members in the Shang Shung Institute Austria in 2015.
  2. All students participating in the Intermediate Level need to be able to read Tibetan and must have basic knowledge of Tibetan grammar.
  3. Students may switch levels according to circumstances.
  4. The working language is English. However, translators who are native speakers of Italian, German, Spanish, French and Chinese are understood and welcome. They are encouraged to translate into their mother tongue.

Fee for the 4 weeks summer-training:

160 Euro Special fee for people who also follow the 6 weekend-courses for advanced or intermediate students: 120 Euro

The 10% Early-Bird discount until May 15th 2015 will be withdrawn from the course fee when your card will be debited.

Advanced Level

The participants will work individually on the translation of the given text between the sessions and their translations will be checked and discussed during the group-meetings. The aim is to form students and produce high quality translations which could be published afterwards. The training will be led by Prof. Fabian Sanders, professor of Tibetan Language and Literature at the Università Ca’ Foscari in Venice.

Requirements for Participation

  1. All participants must be ordinary members in the Shang Shung Institute Austria in 2015.
  2. All students participating must be members of the international Dzogchen-Community in 2015..
  3. All students participating need to have some experience in translating Tibetan texts and must have a working knowledge of Tibetan grammar and common Dharma vocabulary.
  4. The working language is English. However, translators who are native speakers of Italian, German, Spanish, French and Chinese are understood and welcome. They are encouraged to translate into their mother tongue.
