The training for translators from Tibetan is an initiative of the Shang Shung Institute Austria that first started in 2003. In 2014 we will hold the 12th training. Join us and learn to translate ancient texts from the Tibetan tradition. If you are already skilled you can deepen your knowledge, discuss techniques, compare with others, and train your ability in a collaborative environment inspired by the ancient practice of translating in groups.

The training will be divided into two levels: Students will be assigned to them according to their ability and experience. Both levels will be held at the same time.

1. Intermediate Level Intermediate students Level will be given a relatively simple text and work on the translation individually or in small groups. Their work will then be reviewed and corrected in group-sessions. The instructor will be available for clarifications.The objective is for students to become familiar with vocabulary, grammatical structures, and syntax in context. Course fee: 160 Euro plus ordinary membership in Shang Shung Institute Austria for 2014 (50 Euro), with 10% discount if you pay your membership and the total course fee before 15 June 2014. 2. Advanced Level Advanced students will translate in groups with the instructor and focus on all aspects of the language as well as on theories and techniques of translating. They will read and translate without any advance preparation. The text will be more complex both grammatically and in terms of content. The goal is to produce publication-ready translations. Course fee: 90 Euro plus ordinary membership in Shang Shung Institute Austria for 2014 (50 Euro) with a 10% discount if you pay the your membership and the total course fee before 15 June 2014. For sustaining members of the Shang Shung Institute Austria, the course fee is free HERE you can register for the course and HERE you can get your membership

Requirements for Participation
1. All participants must be at least ordinary members in the Shang Shung Institute Austria in 2014.
2. All students participating in the Intermediate Level need to be able to read Tibetan and must have basic knowledge of Tibetan grammar.
3. All students participating in the Advanced Level need to have some experience in translating Tibetan texts and must have a working knowledge of Tibetan grammar and common Dharma vocabulary.
4. Students may switch levels according to circumstances.
5. The working language is English. However, translators who are native speakers of Italian, German, Spanish, French and Chinese are understood and welcome. They are encouraged to translate into their mother tongue.
