In Traditional Tibet, visual art and architecture are understood as means to represent the content of the teachings with forms and colours. In this talk I will show how this principle has been put to work in the architectural form and decorations of the ’Temple of Great Contemplation’, also known as the ‘Merigar Gönpa’.

Behind the Potala in Lhasa is a unique temple with extremely rare and beautiful murals There are unique illustrated representations of the “Great Perfection” or Dzogchen teachings based on treasure scriptures (Tib. terma) from the 15th century. By having identified the literary sources of the murals we can provide in-depth explanations to the splendid and profound images and thus elucidate on the essential meaning of the path of natural self-liberation of the “Great Perfection”.
