As you probably know, conditions in Venezuela are difficult due to political and economic issues. These difficulties have greatly affected not only people, but also animals. Lately, people are abandoning their pets because they cannot feed them. It is heartbreaking and we decided to do something.

A few months ago some practitioners from Tashigar Norte started the Animal Rescue Project (ARP). After some hours enjoying Zaragoza Beach, we were getting ready to go back to Tashigar and met a dying dog in the parking lot. After calling some other practitioners from the Gar who came to help us, we decided to take the dog to Tashigar. We named the dog Masha, and we did not give up on her. After a lot of loving care, she is now healthy and happy. Later on, each time we went to Zaragoza beach we met many more doggies and kittens, who were abandoned, thirsty and hungry. We decided to try to feed them from time to time.

Even though it is sometimes hard for us to find what we need for ourselves every day, we decided to keep going. It became clear that the problem will never cease if the animals continue to breed without stopping. Sterilization is a critical part of making a difference in the longer term. We started to post our project in Facebook and some support started to come from everywhere, people from the Community and outside the Community showing great compassion. With this support we were able to sterilize a few dogs and cats, and also to pay for leg amputations for two dogs with severe injuries.

Dunya, a sweet black dog with three legs is know also living in Tashigar. Max, the other three-legged dog, still has a life at Zaragoza Beach. As this project was taking a more serious form, we requested permission from the Gakyil to organize a “sterilization day” in the posada (at the Gar entrance). They aprroved our idea and also gave us some unused material that was around the Gar to prepare a little shelter for the abandoned animals that will be treated here. We will practice what is called “catch and release” with these animals – bringing them back to health, neutering and spaying them and putting them back at the beach where they were living. If we can find homes for them we do so, but for now many are still finding a home at the beach.

A few sponsors have donated the money to make this possible. Our infinite gratitude to them. Tatyana Fedorchenko TdN member offered us a piece of land next to Tashigar to build a permanent shelter for further events. On December 9th, we will have our first big challange. We expect to treat from 50 to 90 dogs and cats. We can sterilize one cat for $5 US and one dog for $6 US. As you can see, we can make a very big difference with not so very much money. We kindly ask your suppport for even one or two animals. This kindness will go a long way towards lessening the street animal population and aleviating their suffering.
