I wish I could say that I connected with teaching for that reason though, that I met Rinpoche because I was looking for truth, because I was trying to find myself, because I wanted to be a better person. However, that view, somewhat opportunistic, is only partially true. The real reason why I met Rinpoche is because I wanted to leave suffering behind.

After a long chronic illness, Sonja Burgmeier – one of Rinpoche’s first students – passed away on Monday 13 June 2022. Her former partner Marcus Niederlechner – also a student of our master – passed away on 27 April this year.

It’s now 25 years on and my work has helped to powerfully engage diverse communities in addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time, including; intercultural relationships, changing values across the generations, public and private violence, trafficked women, changing futures for indigenous people, mental health, addiction, the asylum seeker story and the potential of an intercultural world. One of my performances ‘Journey of Asylum – Waiting’ was published in an anthology of plays about asylum seekers.
