On June 1 as part of the celebrations for the Day of the Canary Islands, the Ayuntamiento of Adeje and the Association El Patio de las Culturas promoted a gathering groups of people from various areas of the community who came together and enjoyed the richness of each other’s cultures.
The town of Adeje is distinguished by having several groups from different nationalities and religious groups living side by side. The concept of the municipal government is to host cultural events that showcase their traditions and display how they coexist harmoniously.
More and more we recognize that here it is not only the climate that is propitious. It has been one year since work began in Dzamling Gar. Building the facilities that house the Master and the community happened simultaneously with visits to institutions like the City Hall and Cultural Center of Adeje, La Laguna University aiming to introduce the IDC and our project for Dzamling Gar. And, as was pointed out by Rinpoche, integration with the local community was sought. In this way we have worked mindfully since 2013.
The first result of this intention and a measure of the esteem we have earned from the authorities manifested as an invitation to open the event Fusión entre Culturas (Fusion of Cultures) with a presentation of Harmony in the Space. As auspicious as we could wish for! The event was like an open fair on the streets and we hosted a stand where t-shirts and bags, information about our activities and ASIA Onlus were distributed to the sound of Tibetan modern songs playing in the background.
Books, typical food and drinks, games, clothes, photos and decorative articles made up the stands of the other cultural associations: Muslim, Hindu, Hare Krishna, Senegalese, Romanian, Uruguayan, Chilean, Argentine among many others that work for human rights and youth, education. Bollywood dances, tango, a Muslim prayer at midday, activities for kids a presentation of testimonials of immigrants composed the program. This was also a fundraising event to purchase food to be distributed by the Red Cross.
The charming long sleeves of the Tibetan costumes stood out in Adeje’s festive scenery once again the same week. It was at the closing ceremony of the courses on June 3 at Polideportivo Las Torres: sports, classic and modern dances for kids and teenagers from 5-16, yoga and “dance therapy” for adults. Our elegant little dancers joined the presentation and everybody was rewarded with a commemorative medal. This event was held in this very same gymnasium that we held Guru Dragphur Retreat in 2012.
